This is the correct order in which these stationery items were invented:
1. Scissors were invented about 1500 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Unsurprisingly, we don’t have the exact date or the name of the inventor.
2. Pencils were invented in 1564 in England, by an unknown inventor.
3. The pencil sharpener was invented in 1828 in France by Bernard Lassimone. (Between 1564 and 1828 people had had to use a knife!)
4. Elastic or rubber bands were invented in 1845 in England by Stephen Perry.
5. The stapler as we know it was invented in 1866 by American George McGill, although an early version of something similar had existed in eighteenth century France.
6. The typewriter was invented in 1867 in the USA by Christopher Latham Sholes. (Not that it’s very familiar these days – when I showed one to two five year-olds recently, they had no idea what it was!)
7. The modern paper clip was invented in 1899 by Johann Vaaler in Norway, although slightly different variations had been around for some years previously.
8. The ballpoint pen (or biro!) was invented in Hungary in 1938 by Laszlo Biro.
9. Tippex was invented by Betty Claire Graham in the USA in 1956. (Useless piece of information: she was the mother of Mike Nesmith, a member of the Monkees pop group.)
10. Post-it notes were invented in 1977 in the USA jointly by Art Fry and Spencer Silver.
So the correct order from the numbers the stationery items were given originally on the blog is:
